The Value of Keeping a Food Journal

Tags: Diet | food | Food journal | journal | measure

I truly believe that most people that think they don’t eat a lot; really do. I hear it all the time. You can’t lose weight but you swear you are eating right. Chances are you are fooling yourself. Give it a try. Write down EVERY morsel that goes in your mouth. This includes the food you ‘pick’ on when cooking, the piece or 2 of candy you took from someone’s candy dish, the couple of french fries you stuffed in your mouth from your kids happy meal, what you drink (most people don’t take into consideration that a lot of drinks are very calorie dense). You get the idea. Also, make sure you measure everything. What you think is a serving may surprisingly be more, don’t trust you eyes to judge the amount. Test yourself. Pour what you think a serving of cereal in a bowl is (usually one cup). Then take out the measuring cup and see if you got it right. Peanut butter is another one! A serving is 1 tablespoon. Spoon out what you think is a tablespoon then measure it! You may be surprised that your eye is not that accurate! I know mines not! Every couple of months I have to go back to measuring my food to ‘retrain’ my eye.
