But I exercise all the time!

Here's the experience...You exercise, weight starts coming off, and then it stops. A plateau, you think. So continuing on with your routine, the "plateau" continues for what is, or seems like, a really long time, and you start to get discouraged. I know. I've been there! So what's going on?

When we increase our activity level, our bodies use more calories as fuel. As we lose weight, our bodies need less calories to function, but we may have not adjusted caloric intake to reflect that. Also examine where the calories are coming from. Have changes been made towards healthier food items like whole grains, and adding more fruits and vegetables? Are you eliminating processed foods, and eating foods that are prepared by steaming, baking, or broiling? Are you exercising as much as you think you are? Studies show we tend to overestimate our activity level. And lastly, are you doing the same exercise routine all the time? Don't be routine! Change it up, have fun, explore new classes or equipment.

The only way to really know what you're doing is by keeping a log, or journal. See my article "Diet Resolution Revolution" for tips on how to do that. By reviewing the journal entries over time, you will see where changes can be made to help get you over that "plateau". Realize also, that age, metabolic disorders (such as diabetes), and medications we might be taking, all have an effect on how our body utilizes calories. If unsure of any of these may be affecting your progress, consult a medical professional, and work with a trainer to design a program specifically for your needs. Contact me if you have any questions, and I'm always happy to hear about your accomplishments!
