Question from mbillings: Hello, I have lost about 25 pounds since September by doing cardio 5-7 days a week and doing well with it. I recently started lifting weights about 3-4 weeks ag using dumbbells. I lift weights about 3-4 times a week. I've noticed I have gained about 4-5 pounds. I am still doing my cardio and eating what I have been eating to lose the 25 pounds and now I am confused. Why am I gaining weight instead of lose? Is it from my weight lifting? Please help me. Thank you.
Answer from Alicia Wassenberg: First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on your weight loss! Second,Don't panic! Yes, the few pounds you have gained can be from gained muscle! The great news is the muscles you are building will help you burn more calories at rest & during exercise. Sometimes the scale is not the best way to measure success if you are a fit person. Have a trainer at your gym do a caliper (pinch) measurment or the good old tape measure to also track your progress and sometimes simply how your clothes are fitting will help you see if those extra pounds are from body fat or lean muscle. Keep up all your hard work!! Keep us posted on your progress!!
Answer from Tami Racaniello: It's always great to see results from our efforts. You must feel wonderful about your accomplishments! The weight gain could be from muscle, but when you lose weight, your caloric needs change. You mention you have been eating what you were eating to lose the weight, but you probably need to adjust that. Start keeping a journal, writing down what you eat. Keep track of your exercise also, since our bodies adapt to exercises over time, and your routine may need to be changed as well. Having everything in writing in front of you, makes it easier to see certain patterns, and then you can go forward from there. If you have any questions, feel free to email me! All the best, Tami Rac
