Question from Moriah Britt: I'm currently 5'5" and weigh 125lbs. I am by no means over weight but I would like to get down to 115-118. I work out at least 5 days a week alternating running 5-6 miles, spinning classes, and the elliptical for 45-55 minutes. I try to also use weights and do abs but am some times crunched with time. Would any of you recommend a diet to go along with this routine in order to take off the extra 10 lbs?

Answer from Emily Splichal: I definately recc switching some of your cardio training for the resistance training. You need to start focusing on building your lean mass which can only be done with the weights. This increase in lean body mass will increase your resting metabolic rate and help you take off those extra pounds.

Answer from Linda O'Byrne: Moriah, I agree that you're doing too much cardio and you'd really benefit from doing weights 3 times a week and cutting back on cardio. If you overdo cardio then you risk loosing lean muscle which will ultimately lower your metabolic rate. Increasing your muscle mass will reverse this situation and help you reach your goal, not only will your body burn more calories but your physique will begin to look more sculpted. As for diet, eat 5-6 smaller meals throughout the day and include lean proteins (tuna, chicken breast, fish, lean meats), whole-grain carbohydrates (brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, oatmeal, yams) and essential fats and every meal. This will keep your energy level high for intense workouts and help to fuel your body and optimize fat burning. Cut out junk foods and all processed or white foods (think white bread, white rice etc). Also cutting alcohol from your diet will help shed the last few pounds.
