My younger sister also swam competitively and now ...

Question from Celia Rand: My younger sister also swam competitively and now she is in college and seems to be putting on the freshman 15. Any advice for a workout she can do to keep the weight off (you know those college students- lots of drinking and not so much sleep!)

Answer from Gail Akers: Oh yes I remember the Freshman 15!! To lose the weight your sister is going to have to change her diet/nutrition and add exercise... these two components must be done together for real success. One benefit your sister has is that she was once a competitive athlete, so once she starts exercising and training, her body will respond well to it plus she will probably enjoy it. Many college universities have excellent fitness facilities (usually of no or very little cost) and some even have exercise science students on staff in these facilities that can help with an exercise training program that will meet her goals and her current fitness level. As far as her nutrition, she can seek help of a dietitian and/or nutritionist ( may seek out that department at the university). If there is not a dietian/nutrionist available your sister is going to have to make changes in her diet, she needs to be aware of how many claories she is consuming daily and try to reduce her daily caloric intake. One thing she needs to do is cut way back on the alcohol, it is calorie loaded and a real diet sabotager. Bottom line is she has to creat a caloric deficit (thorugh her food) and caloric expenditure (the exercise) to lose weight. Tell her 3,500 calories equals one pound so if she reduces her daily caloric intake by 300 calories and exercises 5 days a week burning 250 calories per session she would lose a pound a week!!!
