Question from Sandra Litani: I tried to climb the rock wall at my local rec center, and I just had NO upper body strength. What would you recommend me do so I dont feel like a wimp next time i try to climb t herock wall!?

Answer from Ken Moody: I get similar questions from clients all the time about sports or activity specific exercises. And the BEST answer is to continue to work on that particular activity-taking your time to progress slowly and wisely! Example, I teach a strength building technique class that improves body alignment, and clients will often ask, "What exercises should I do to help me sit taller/straighter?" And I always say the best exercise to help you sit taller....is to keep practicing sitting taller! But of course, as you can imagine, there are many other exercises we use in this class to build strength. If you feel your issue is general weakness, I would do very basic weight training exercises like Squats or Leg presses, leg extensions, leg curls, and the abductor/adductor machine that most gyms have. (Because climbing involves more than just upper body strength.) For upper body, I would suggest bench presses, lat pulldowns or rows, overhead shoulder presses, and biceps curls and tricep extensions. I would do 3 sets of each exercise with 15-20 reps for legs and 12-15 reps for upper body. But I know climbing involves hand strength too. For that, I would pick the brains of the climbing instructor(s) at your facility. And you may find it will involve something as simple as one of those curious, small squeeze balls to build strength in your hands/grip. Good luck, and keep at it!
