Question from Tim Powers: If pilates is good for your abs, then what is the difference between taking a 30- min abs class and a pilates class?
Answer from Lisa K Reynolds: Hello Tim, In my opinion they are both great for your core. It is all about choices and keeping your body on it's toes cause it will adapt very quickly to the same old routine. When I teach Pilates I incorporate a lot more than just abs. I utilize the entire body especially the legs.Pilates allows you to really connect with those abs-literally! Take a class and find out why you will not regret it. When I teach an abs class I use a lot of toys i.e. slide, core boards, ball because regular old crunches are boring and so many people still do them incorrectly. So the name of the game is variety but above all have fun with those abs. Take care of that core!
Answer from Tami Racaniello: An abs class does not necessarily mean core exercises, whereas in Pilates, the exercises always engage the core. The core is all the muscles that support the spine. The abs are just a part of those muscles. A Pilates class will teach you how to engage all those core muscles. Pilates classes also use less reps, and the movements are generally slower, and more rhythmic. I encourage you to do both, and I think you'll find the Pilates classes will enhance the abdominal workouts, as you'll gain more awareness of those muscles, more strength, and better control.
