Debra Strougo, a trainer at RoadFit, a Manhattan based outdoor fitness company, says she understands the appeal of working out at home or outside.

Strougo takes her clients outside to do step-ups on park benches and pull-ups on street lamps - but says doing some housework will help burn calories too. She says opting to do laundry instead of choosing a wash and fold service and cleaning your apartment instead of hiring a maid will help your body and your wallet.

"Everyone is trying to maximize the time they can sit in a bar or on their couch by bringing in help for household chores. But, in reality a little bit of housework will burn a lot of calories - anything you're moving is burning calories that you wouldn't have been burning otherwise," she says.

"Steer clear of heavy cream in sauces and dressings," she suggests. "Instead, use noncaloric seasonings like paprika."

Drink before you eat. "A pint of water before you begin any meal will ensure that you don't overeat," says Debra Strougo.
