Baby It's Cold Outside
by Margie Goldsmith

The time change brings short days and signals that winter is on its way. However, cold temperatures and a little snow shouldn't stop you from getting outside and enjoying the rush of fresh air and the many winter activities the Big Apple has to offer.

Just because it’s getting cold doesn’t mean you have to shelve your outdoor workout. Hey, we’re New Yorkers and we’re tough. No matter how frigid, icy or slushy, we bundle up, get outside and work up enough of a sweat to think it’s already spring. Training outdoors is invigorating and empowering, Central Park is much less crowded and, for those looking for inspiration with their perspiration, the Big Apple offers enough outdoor core conditioning classes, triathlon training, running, ice skating and group hikes to ward off the winter blues. Here are some of our top picks.

Outdoor Conditioning Classes

“There’s no bad weather, just bad clothing,” says Eric VonFrolich, trainer and CEO of Roadfit, which offers conditioning classes in Central Park through January (and if at least three people show up, through February). “New Yorkers don’t have to balk at the idea of exercising outside in the winter,” says VonFrolich. ”It’s just a matter of getting warmed up and prepared.” Roadfit’s Central Park classes meet at 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue mornings and evenings and then head into the park. The class includes squats, lunges, sit-ups, and tricep dips interspersed with cardio drills—except this being Central Park, tricep dips are done on the benches and sprints are up the Bethesda Terrace stairs. Classes are $30 each or 6 packs are $150 and 12 packs, $250. Private classes are also available to small groups. For more information on Roadfit see www.roadfit.com.
