Instead of making a resolution to go on a diet, how about resolving to make a lifestyle change? Get a notebook, and start a journal. In the first page or two, write down why you want to make healthy changes and choices, in your life. Yes, maybe you have a special event coming up, or a vacation, and you want to look extra good in that outfit. There is nothing wrong with that, but go beyond that. Find reasons to keep you motivated to continue that healthy lifestyle. Outline your plan, and set realistic goals: Lose 1 or 2 pounds a week, Eat more fruits and vegetables daily, Cut out sugary foods and beverages, Get more activity, etc. If it is helpful, cut out a picture of something that motivates, or inspires you (a person, clothing that you want to wear, etc.). Maybe you have a favorite quote you want to put down on the page. When your journal is set up, start writing down what you eat daily, along with the time of day of the meal. Yep, everything - breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, even all the times you taste the food when you're cooking. Also log in activity for the day (Did you go to the gym?, take a walk during lunch break?, etc) I kept a journal to help with my weight loss, and I still do from time to time, just to make sure I keep on track with my fitness plan. Once you see the patterns in your eating habits and activity levels, you can make adjustments that align with the goals you've set. Keep re-evaluating your goals, and change them as you need to, to keep yourself moving forward. If you need extra motivation, share your goals with a supportive friend or spouse, and hire a certified personal trainer that can design a plan for your needs, show you how to make the most of your exercise time, and help you set, and evaluate your goals. You can make the changes to live healthier everyday, and don't you deserve it?
